Author Colin Woodard argues that they almost certainly link you to one of eleven distinct “nation-states” whose cultural dynamics inform everything from voting patterns, to social values, to the role of government. See if this list makes you want to learn more: Yankeedom, New Netherlands, the Midlands, Tidewater, Greater Appalachia, Deep South, El Norte, the Left Coast, the Far West, New France, and First Nation. We’ll explore each one and see why Woodard’s thesis has attracted adherents from both sides of the U.S. political spectrum.
